Embryonic Stem Cell Research: A Conclusion

In addition to providing cures for debilitating diseases, the cells also offer a "never-been-seen glimpse into the earlier stages of human development." Thus, one cannot deny that the benefits for scientific research regarding these stem cells is greatly rewarding. Although opposers may be skeptical about the benefits regarding ESC research, advocate Harold Varmus justifies his argument against any critics by announcing: "These findings... bring medical research to the edge of a new frontier that is extraordinarily promising. It is not too unrealistic to say that this research has the potential to revolutionize the practice of medicine and improve the quality and length of life." Most scientists also stress that stem cells are biologically closer related to other types of cells, such as blood cells, than to a complete embryo.

Scientific research on embryonic stem cells should most certainly be made legal and federally funded because scientists theorize that embryonic stem cells are a thousand times easier to work with than adult cells, research has already been developed in economically advanced countries around the world, and in doing so, great potential is put forth for cures to debilitating diseases. Society would be much improved if ESC research was funded federally. We, as citizens of the United States, have a choice: Will we take these thousands of stem cells and dispose of them, or use them in a scientific lab to give some child suffering from a disease such as juvenile diabetes a chance for a normal, fulfilling life?
